Sri Lankan sweets are not all that common to the general public, so to quickly get you familiarized with the delicious world of Sri Lankan sweets, here are a few things to know.
- Desserts accompany main meals and sweets are served at tea time.
- Coconut is almost always found in desserts and sweets - coconut milk, fresh coconut, grated coconut and shredded coconut are common ingredients.
- Other popular ingredients include rice flour, semolina, condensed milk, cream, treacle, jaggery, nuts, spices and ghee.
Sweets are particularly popular during festivals, as everyone indulges in little sweet treats to ring in the holidays.
The recipe we're featuring today is for Rava Laddu (semolina laddu), a mixture of coconut, roasted semolina, condensed milk, cashews, raisins and spices. This mixture is formed into bite sized balls and are perfect to enjoy with coffee or tea.
Semolina is a great ingredient to keep stocked in your kitchen. You can make a variety of desserts and cakes with semolina and it is so versatile and can be flavoured however you like. We stock a variety of semolina in store, but our popular Cedar Semolina #1 (fine grain) is perfect for this recipe.
